Some Enchanted (Networking) Evening

Some evenings, networking evenings that is, things just seem to click. The venue is perfect, the crowd a good mix of old friends and new faces, there’s just enough people to make it seem like the event is theĀ  “happening” place to be and not so many that you feel as if you’re in a crowded subway car.

Some enchanted evening indeed.

And yes sometimes it all comes together seamlessly and others, well not so much and that’s where the working part of “networking” comes into play.

Most networkers have seen the “good,” the “bad” and the “ugly” when it comes to their networking experiences. Events gone bad are the bane of our existence but sometimes if you work just a little bit harder you might turn what seems to be a dud into an evening that is well, enchanted.

Here’s how:

  • Make it a point to seek out at least 3 new people with whom you can engage and share possible synergies (professional as well as personal {i.e. what about those Yankees. etc.})
  • Smile and don’t stand in the corner looking as if you are up next for a root canal.
  • Recognize that some good can come from any evening even if it means finding out that this is group that you WON’T visit again!
  • Reconnect with your old contacts and make a point of asking questions about their business and what new products or services are on the horizon. It’s amazing how much business can be generated from working your existing contacts. (Really!)

Make sense?

Song by Richard Rodgers, Ezio Pinza, …

Some enchanted evening
You may see a stranger
You may see a stranger
Across a crowded room
And somehow you know
You know even then
That someday you’ll see her
Again and again

Some enchanted evening
Someone may be laughing
You may hear her laughing
Across a crowded room
And night after night
As strange as it seems
The sound of her laughter
Will sing in your dreams

Who can explain it
Who can tell you why
Fools give reasons
Wise men never try

Some enchanted evening
When you find your true love
When you feel her call you
Across a crowded room
Then fly to her side
And make her your own
Or all through your life
You may dream all alone

Once you have found her
Never let her go
Once you have found her
Never let her go
